Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs) (FOI/5102)

Message from Nottinghamshire County Council - 18 December 2024

Dear ***** *****,

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 – REQUEST FOR INFORMATION REFERENCE FOI/5102

Thank you for your request for information relating to Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs).

We are now able to provide the following information:

Re-Approval Statistics

  • Over the past five years, how many Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs) applied for re-approval in your council
Total number of AMHPs - 42
AMHPs reapproved within the last 5 years - 25
Newly Approved AMHPs – 10
Pending reapproval in next 12mths - 7
  • Of those applications, how many were successful, and how many were not
All AMHPs have been successful in approval/reapproval
Reasons for Non-Approval

  • For AMHPs who were not re-approved, what were the primary reasons
    • Lack of required training hours
    • Failure to demonstrate necessary competencies
    • Professional conduct issues
    • Other (please specify)
In 2022 we have one AMHP who was not successful in approval following completion of AMHP Training, due to failure to demonstrate necessary competencies, this person no longer works for the LA.
Support and Remediation
  • Does your council offer support or remediation plans for AMHPs who are at risk of not being re-approved If so, please describe these programs.
We have an annual review, where AMHPs are required to reflect against the core competencies, identify any learning and development and during which a direct observation of practice is completed. This provides an opportunity to identify any additional areas of support/development.
Appeal Process
  • Is there an established appeal process for AMHPs who are denied re-approval If yes, how many appeals have been made in the past five years, and what were their outcomes
We do not have an established appeals process, but do have an AMHP Panel which is then governed by an overarching AMHP Management panel where any decisions can be reviewed.
Impact on Workforce
  • How does the council address potential shortages in AMHP staffing due to non-approvals Are there strategies in place to mitigate any negative impacts on service delivery

AMHP workforce plan in place, annual reviews identify any learning/development/competency related issues
