FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 – REQUEST FOR INFORMATION REFERENCE FOI/7532

Thank you for your request for information relating to Potholes.

We are now able to provide the following information:

1. How many different category of potholes are there

There are 3 categories of defects, more information can be found here - Highway Inspection and Risk Manual | Nottinghamshire County Council

2. How many reports of each different category of pothole - broken down clearly - has there been reported between
2a, April 1 2025 to March 31 2026,
2b. April 1 2024 to March 31 2025,
2c. April 1 2023 to March 31 2024

(Data running up to March 31 2026 may not be in full depending on when this request is responded to. In this case, provide as much data including March 2026 and specify what March date the data runs up to.)


Please see below table for number of carriageway pothole reports, please note potholes are not reported by category of defect. March 2026 information has been provided for reports up to and including March 16th which is when we received the FOI request.

3. How much the council has spent on all of these works listed in question 2, giving three separate financial figures for each year window represented.

The costs are not recorded individually and form part of the wider maintenance budget, therefore cannot be provided.

4. How much money the council has spent specifically on category 1 potholes across the three years mentioned in question 2, giving three separate financial figures for each year window represented.

The costs are not recorded individually and form part of the wider maintenance budget, therefore cannot be provided. However, please see below- b) The total highways maintenance budget.

6. How many repairs were completed across the time periods in question 2, compared the amount of works logged for that time period.


A comparison as such cannot be provided as we may have received multiple reports for the same defect, and some reports may not result in a job being raised.

Please note that we find that the term "pothole" is used by the public to cover a range of concerns, from surface crazing and ride quality to actual defects. As many of these concerns do not transpire to what we identify as potholes, we are providing data on jobs created specific to where a void has formed in the surface that requires a high priority (Cat 1) response in accordance with Nottinghamshire County Council Highway Inspection and Risk Manual linked above.

7. How many reports of potholes are still outstanding, broken down into the separate categories of potholes and by which date they are outstanding


This cannot be provided as pothole are not categorised until they have been inspected.
