Disclosure Log

Potholes (FOI/6093)

Message from Nottinghamshire County Council - 25 July 2025

Dear ***** *****,

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 – REQUEST FOR INFORMATION REFERENCE FOI/6093

Thank you for your request for information relating to Potholes.

We are now able to provide the following information:

  1. As of 1 June 2025, how many reported potholes in your local authority area were awaiting repair (i.e. logged but not yet filled) Please provide the most up to date figure. – We find that the term “pothole” is often used by the public to describe a range of road surface concerns — from surface crazing and ride quality issues to actual structural defects. When we receive a report, a highway inspector carries out an inspection. If any actionable defects are identified, a job is raised for repair. As of 10:33am on 24/07/2025, there are currently 960 potholes in our system awaiting repair. Please note, this figure changes daily as new reports are received and existing jobs are completed.
  2. How many miles of road in your jurisdiction are currently listed as GREEN, AMBER or RED in line with the RCI Index Please provide the latest data you have in miles. – See the below table:
 Length of road in Miles
RedAmberGreen
A Roads13.855.2276
B and C Roads81.3175.3444.4
Unclassified Roads341.0375.1988.9

  1. Based on current repair rates and available resources, what is your estimated timescale to clear the entire backlog of reported but unrepaired potholes as of 30th June 2025 Please provide an answer in months or years. – We are unable to answer this question directly as we don’t hold a ‘backlog’ in the traditional sense. All reported potholes awaiting repair have a target completion date based on their defect category, which is determined in line with the Highway Inspection & Risk Manual (HIRM) -  available here: Highway Inspection and Risk Manual | Nottinghamshire County Council. We aim to repair all defects in timeframe specified. Further details can be found in Section 15 of the HIRM, titled ‘Categories of Defect’.

We trust this now satisfies your request and that you find this information to be helpful, however if you are unhappy with the way in which your request has been handled, then please email us at [email protected] quoting the reference FOI/6093 and we will be happy to review your request
