Damage and Costs Incurred Through Poor Maintenance of Roads (FOI/7291)

Message from Nottinghamshire County Council - 19 February 2026

Dear Requester,

Request FOI/7291

Further to your request received on 12th February 2026, I confirm that the Council has now considered your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Questions & Answers)

  1. How much has been paid for road repairs in the Gedling area last two years
There is no breakdown for reactive spend for specific areas, as all costs are charged to the maintenance budget, which is Countywide, therefore, there is no reporting dataset that can provide this information.

  1. What is the nature of the contract with private sector (e.g. paid per pothole repaired; other)
The County Council has not engaged with the private sector for the delivery of highway maintenance works.

Via EM Ltd. who undertake these works for us are a company which is wholly owned by Nottinghamshire County Council.

  1. What monitoring regime is in place to inspect the quality of pothole repair work in particular
The Highway Contract Management team undertakes sample inspections of Via EM Ltd.’s work however, these inspections would generally be associated with schemes which form part of the County Council’s Capital Maintenance Programme.

As Via EM Ltd. is the County Council’s own company, its Senior Managers, Contracts Agents etc. are expected to undertake inspections of the works carried out on the County Council’s behalf particularly revenue works such as repairing highway defects.

  1. How much money has the council paid out in compensation for damage to vehicles

Total Compensation Paid for Claims in Gedling
2024£3,156.82
2025£509.62

We hope you find this information useful.
