Message from Nottinghamshire County Council - 02 March 2026
Dear *********,
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 – REQUEST FOR INFORMATION REFERENCE FOI/7387
Thank you for your request for information relating to FOLLOW UP.
We are now able to provide the following information:
First, we are questioning the figure for 2024/5: is this only for a part year and is that why it is so low If not can the change be explained (or maybe checked). The 2024/25 figure of 699 is correct and for the full year. In 2022/23 and 2023/24 the council received a higher-than-average number of claims. In 2024/25 claim numbers reduced back to levels experienced in 2021/22 and 2020/21.
1. We are also very surprised that the council has no record of how much was paid out. This seems astonishing as this means the organisation has no idea of the risk going forward. Please can you confirm that this the case The Council does have a record of what has been paid out, and this was confirmed in our response to FOI 7155. At the time the response was prepared no money had been paid out to claimants who were pursuing a claim as a pedestrian or cyclist for the year 2024/25.
2. Can I also ask does the County self-insure or is it insured by a third-party company The Council self-insures up to the excess agreed with its commercial insurer.
3. If it insures by a third-party company what is the excess on any claim please £500,000
Q4, There are two Elected Members (Cllrs Stewart Matthews & Kevin Brown) appointed to the board of directors of Via. They are appointed as part of the Council’s oversight function of Via. So not something that should be seen as a conflict of interest.
We trust this now satisfies your request and that you find this information to be helpful, however if you are unhappy with the way in which your request has been handled, then please email us at foi@***** quoting the reference FOI/7387 and we will be happy to review your request
