Message from Nottinghamshire County Council - 13 March 2026
Dear *********
Freedom of Information Request – Ref: FOI/00007488
Thank you for your email of 11th March 2026 where you requested information about LGPS. The response to your request is provided below.
In your request you asked:
Can members transfer in previous personal pensions to the scheme, just previous LGPS / public sector schemes And does the 12 month rule apply to personal pensions too if you can transfer those in Whether that be directly to the LGPS via their Prudential AVC.
A request to transfer benefits from a previous pension scheme can be made within 12 months of becoming a member of the Local Government Pension Scheme. This timeframe can be extended with the permission of a scheme employer and the Pension Fund.
The process for a transfer in from a previous pension scheme involves the Fund initially being provided with transfer value information and the relevant discharge forms from a previous pension provider. Upon receipt of this information a quotation calculation is undertaken to allow the scheme member to make an informed decision about transferring benefits to the Local Government Pension Scheme. Following this, if the member wishes to proceed with the transfer, the previous pension providers transfer forms are completed by both the scheme member and the Pension Fund as the receiving scheme and these are then sent to the provider with a covering letter requesting payment of the transfer value.
In respect of a transfer in of previous Local Government Pension Scheme membership (either within the same or another authority’s Pension Fund), where a member has less than 2 years previous membership, this will be automatically aggregated with new membership upon re-joining the scheme. Where a member has previous deferred membership, under the current rules of the scheme, this would also be aggregated upon re-joining the scheme although a member will have the opportunity to retain separate benefits should they wish to, within the first 12 months of re-joining (or a longer time period subject to an employer’s permission).
