Further to your request received on 22nd July 2024 I confirm that the Council has now considered your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
1. How many potholes were reported to the Council between 01/01/2023 and 31/12/2023
The number of customer reports received during this time frame was 69,282. However, please note that this number includes all reports made for flooding/drainage, highway obstructions, street lighting, all carriageway and footway defects, signage and furniture as well as trees/vegetation as we store this information as one figure.
2. How many potholes were repaired by the Council between 01/01/2023 and 31/12/2023
The number of emergency, category 1, category 2 and category 3 defects repaired during this period was 67,112. Category definitions can be found in our Highway Inspection and Risk Manual - Highway Inspection and Risk Manual (nottinghamshire.gov.uk).
3. How many potholes were repaired by the Council more than once between 01/01/2023 and 31/12/2023
We do not hold this information.
4. How much has the Council spent on pothole repairs Please give financial statistics for the period 01/01/23-31/12/2023
This information is recorded by financial year, not calendar year, therefore, I have provided the financials for both FY2022/2023 and FY2023/2024 to cover the time frame requested. This is the value of the contract investment between Via East Midlands Ltd and Nottinghamshire County Council that NCC has made in a range of techniques to address the repairs of defects, including carriageway reconstruction, resurfacing, surface dressing, spray injection patching, structural patching and temporary repairs to make defects safe prior to a permanent repair:
2022/2023 = £18,250,000
2023/2024 = £23,031,769.

11. What is the Council’s average repair cost per pothole
We are unable to provide the average costs per repair as they are not recorded at on a job-by-job level. They form part of the overall maintenance budget for the full county.
12. Do the Council use external contractors to fix potholes, or do you have an inhouse Team
Via East Midlands Ltd is responsible for highway maintenance on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council and is wholly owned by Nottinghamshire County Council.
13. How many full-time equivalent staff does Council currently employ to inspect it’s road network to identify and classify pot holes or potential highway defects
Via East Midlands Ltd currently employ 20 full-time Highway Inspectors.
14. If not outsourced, how many full-time equivalent staff does the Council currently employ to repair pot holes or highway defects
We cannot provide this information due to our maintenance team being responsible for range of highway works.
15. Do the Council measure environmental impact or carbon footprint of potholes repairs
Via East Midlands have not historically used any methods to measure the carbon implications around individual pothole repair.
16. How many miles of highway is the Council responsible for maintaining
2,766 miles.
