Disclosure Log
shared use routes (FOI/4952)
Message from Nottinghamshire County Council - 22 November 2024
Dear ***** *****
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 – REQUEST FOR INFORMATION REFERENCE FOI/4952
Thank you for your request for information relating to shared use routes, which we have dealt with under the Environmental Information Regulations 2004.
According to the Department of Transport definition "Shared Use Routes" are designed to accommodate the movement of pedestrians and cyclists. They can be created from new, or by converting existing footways or footpaths. Shared Use Routes may be segregated or unsegregated." These will include footways, footpaths, towpaths or any other public right of way in the area. Please include all of the above when counting.
1. Where possible, the amount of miles of Shared Use Routes in existence in your local authority area on 28/10/2024.
At present, there are approximately 150.5 miles of shared use routes adjacent to carriageway. There are also 1,773 miles of Right of Ways across the county. This includes bridleways, byway open to all traffic (BOAT), restricted byways and footpaths.
2. Where possible, the amount of miles of pedestrian footways, footpaths, towpaths or any other public right of way in the area that have been converted to Shared Use Routes in the past 6 years. Please provide a breakdown for each calendar year. This time period should include (01/01/2018-01/01/2023) and where possible (01/01/2024-28/10/2024).
9,268 metres of footways (non-public right of way footpaths, bridleways etc.) have been converted to shared use routes in the last 6 financial years.
Infrastructure delivered was historically categorised based on funding reporting requirements. Therefore for the period 2018/19 to 2019/20, this is categorised as ‘Off-road segregated (any cycle paths not on-road, including shared use next to the carriageway and away from roads)’ – in 2018/19 there were 6,057 metres delivered, and in 2019/20 there were 2,986 metres delivered. From 2020/21, this is recorded differently and during the period 2022/23 there were 225 metres of shared use (walking and cycling) facilities delivered, with none delivered in 2020/21, 2021/22 or 2023/24.

As the construction of some schemes will span more than one financial year, the figures given above are based on the financial year in which schemes were completed.
